Aztec calendar

The Aztec calendar, often times mistakenly referred to the Sun Stone. Also referred to the Stone of Axayacati otherwise, the Aztec Calendar; is a well known calendar that has been getting more and more frequent attentions from our society. The Aztec calendar is a depiction of twenty day signs. There is also the four eras of the suns which are thought to have preceded our fifth sun which was not used as this calendar. However, instead it was thought to be used as the sacrificial alter of the Aztec calendar. However, with that said. You may still be scratching your head and wondering what the Aztec Calendar actually is.

The Aztec calendar isn't just one simple calendar. Instead, there are two independent systems that combine to create the Aztec calendar that we know and love. The first half of this calendar is the xiuhpohualli. This section has three hundred and sixty five days. It uses these days to describe rituals related to the seasons that the earth goes through. This is why it is considered to be the agricultural or solar year of the Aztec calendar.

The other side of this coin, the tonalpohualli or (day count), has two hundred and sixty days total. This has been called the sacred calendar by many as it was used primarily as a divinatory tool. It is thought to divide the days and rituals up between the Aztec gods. While it isn't understood completely, many people have their own speculations on the workings of this ancient Aztec calendar.
